Functional anatomy
In this context, functional anatomy considers the behavioral tendencies of muscles and nerves when a joint is moved. Is the range of motion limited? Where, if any, is pain when moved? What is the quality of movement, is it smooth, ratchety, spasmodic, etc.? A functional approach to anatomy takes into consideration the interrelatedness of the neuromuscular system around a joint. (i.e., when dealing with neuromuscular pain on one side of a joint, the antagonist muscles on the other side will always be involved).
